In Geneva, “Habibi” Means Blows And Injuries

Habibi. The term is sweet to the ear, evoking the impulse of the heart and the body
towards the loved one. At Pitoeff Theater, These days, the term freezes the blood,
because the man who pronounces it constantly to his wife is violent. Insults, shouting,
blows and wounds, the play written and directed by Silvia Barreiros unceremoniously
restores domestic hell.
The peculiarity ofHabibi? A Tunisian anchorage as evidenced by two of the five actors,
Nedra Toumi and Mourad Dridi. It is because the director began her research on
gender violence in this Maghreb country “where associations are campaigning for the
marital duties appearing in the Constitution to be modified with a view to greater
female emancipation”, explains she says at the end of the performance. Feminicides
from elsewhere, feminicides from here. How to curb this murderous anger?

Unusual, to see the very sweet Roberto Molo turn into a filthy tyrant, both aggressive
and pleading. From the first scene, the husband – he is never named – breaks,
destroys, insults, humiliates. In his claws, the wife (Nedra Toumi), also anonymous,
suffers. She does have an inner voice that invites her to rebellion, but her body never
takes action. For twenty years, she has endured the assaults of her oppressor in a
space-time that seems suspended.
The reason for so much anger? A pathological jealousy of the husband who is only a
small employee while his other half is a manager, beautiful and brilliant. The chronically
frustrated stalks his wife’s slightest “missteps” in public (talking with a stranger,
smiling at a colleague, laughing with a friend, etc.) and, back home, accuses her of
being “a fucking provocative” or “the queen of sluts who loot from man to man all
evening long”. Silence of the wife, rage of the aggressor who beats up his prey.

Normality of the slap
The show is tough. Especially since the husband does not soften by becoming a father
and we witness the wobbly growth of Marc (Mourad Dridi), son witness to the
domestic drift. Even the beautiful family (Latifa Djerbi and Djamel Belghazi) fails to
protect the wife. On the contrary, the sister-in-law makes him understand that women
have duties and that it is necessary to know how to calm the male storm even if it
means “taking one from time to time”…
We are suffocating, therefore, at the Pitoëff Theater, even if some scenes recall the
delights of the beginning. To evoke the intrusive nature of violence, Silvia Barreiros and
Kahled Kouri, in the scenography, imagined a bathtub that sits in the center of the
stage and in which the heroine tries to take refuge without success. During a
particularly vehement anger, the water that calms even threatens to become the water
that kills…
